Description

Itinerary: Bern - Belpberg - Jaberg - Thalgut - Biglen - Landiswil - Steinhof - Burgdorf - Bern

The excursion introduces the basic problems of Quaternary stratigraphy in the Northern Alpine foreland where most of the information is hidden in coarse clastic deposits. This means the visit of gravel pits cannot be avoided. The key sites of Jaberg, Thalgut, Landiswil and Steinhof are visited. The present state of chronological understanding (Lithostratigraphy, palynostratigraphy, OSL, Surface Exposure Dating, etc…) is presented. Of special interest may be the site of Thalgut which is the longest Quaternary record of the Swiss Midlands.
