Description

Itinerary: Bern - St. Beatus caves - Aare Gorge - Bern

St. Beatus caves (by Philippe Häuselmann)
St. Beatus caves are an example of how cave deposits are used in the context of the reconstruction of valley incision as well as for the reconstruction of past climate. The visit in the part of the cave open for tourists (no special clothing required) will show evidence of the complex history of the cave during the past 400'00 years.

Aare Gorge (by Frank Preusser)
The Aare Gorge is situated within a riegel of limestone bedrock in the upper Aare Valley, a region that was repeatedly glaciated during the Quaternary. The gorge has a length of 1.4 km and is up to 200 m deep. Beside the presently open gorge, several older gorges were cut into the bedrock but are presently filled by Quaternary sediments.
