TitleGlacial erosional landforms and the timing of LGM ice decay at Grimsel Pass
Description

Itinerary: Bern - Grimsel Pass - Bern

Day's schedule: We'll start out from Bern and drive to the Aare Schlucht (gorge). There we will do a 1.5 km walk through the gorge where we will look at fluvial erosional features in the limestone and discuss the origin of the gorge(s).
Depending on the timing (before or after lunch) we will visit the famous Halle platte, a highly polished Grimsel granodiorite surface where someone carved a small plaque in honor L. Agassiz.
After a lunch in a small local restaurant, we will visit the famous crystal grotto located 1.5 km inside Jüchlistock. The grotto was found in 1974 during digging of the access tunnel to the underground power plant.
Next we will go up to Grimsel Pass to look at glacial erosional features and discuss the extent of ice during the LGM and Lateglacial.

Note
Level of difficulty: intermediate (2200-2600 m altitude). A good pair of hiking shoes as well as rain gear are necessary.
