| Description | The Rhone-Glacier is one of the center-pieces in glaciological and paleoclimate research in the Central Alps. It is also there, where in the second half of the 19th Century detailed measurements on the glaciers dynamic behaviour were carried out, resulting in a wonderful and famous publication. - Again and again, this glacier has attracted scientists for many different purposes and recently, Conradin Zahno has done a detailed glaciological survey and Jörg Schäfer and his group has started to study erosion rates at the bedrock riegel in front of the glacier terminus. The results of both investigations are just about what you are expecting on an INQUA fieldtrip. Travel from Bern across Grimselpass to Rhone Glacier and back home again by Bus. Glacier traverse under guidance of a mountain guide. It is imperative that you show up with proper equipment (solid mountain boots, warm clothing and personal medication, if necessary). Lunch will be provided. Rhone Glacier is privately owned, so an entrance fee will have to be paid. Support Supported by Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research (SFAR). |
