Description

This fieldtrip will first lead us to Steingletscher with its impressive Litte Ice Age moraine ridges. We will cross two alpine passes (Susten 2224 m and Oberalp 2044 m) and follow the River Rhine (Vorderrhein) for some time. Last stop on the first day will be at Films, the largest rock fall in the Alps. On the second day, we will leave the Alps, visit the Rhine Falls and discus the Quaternary history of northern Switzerland. At Irchel, the boundary between Tertiary bedrock and Early Pleistocene gravel will be shown. Niederweningen with its mammoth museum and the site of a 100 m scientific drilling through the sedimentary filling of a glacial overdeepended valley will be the last topic of our tour.

The field trip will end at Zürich Airport not later than 18:00 on Friday, 29th of July. From there, you will also have direct train connection to Zürich main station. The bus wil return to Bern and should arrive there not later then 20:00 (given that there are no major traffic jams).
