#63
Title High and Central Asia - Pleistocene Glaciations and related geomorphological phenomena
CommissionTERPRO PALCOMM
Description

In the session new results from the mountain areas from the Himalaya to the mountain ranges of Siberia and from Anatolia to Sichuan will be discussed in order to further the knowledge of the maximum glacier extent during the LGM (Late Glacial Maximum) and traces of older glaciations including evidence reaching back to the Middle Pleistocene.
Age determination is of crucial importance for the reconstruction of the glacial history. Radiocarbon dating and other methods of age determination including the interpretation of geomorphological evidence like moraine sequences and glacier stages, and age determinations by lichenometry, OSL and TCN data and their limitations are to be discussed. The presentation of biological evidence will also be welcome.
Rearrangement of moraines and debris, denudation and mass movements by rock avalanches, debris flows, landslides, and also periglacial processes will be discussed as well as hydrologically induced mass movements - caused by glacier meltwater - up to GLOFs, which are genetically connected with the history of glaciation of the last c. 20 000 to 30 000 years.
Contributions regarding the glacio-isostatic crustal movement, the ELA (snowline) reconstruction of the Asian mountains and the palaeo-climatological consequences of the glaciation of High Asia will be included, as well as the High to Late Glacial lake history.
