Title Inter-hemispheric climate perspectives from high-precision glacier records
CommissionTERPRO PALCOMM
Description

Recent progress in mapping and dating glacial landforms affords for new perspectives on the terrestrial climate system on a global-scale. The combined application of detailed geomorphic mapping and cutting-edge chronological tools has the potential to realize Louis Agassiz’ vision to directly reconstruct past glacier fluctuations in many areas on earth, and, in turn, to reconstruct the inter-hemispheric signature of ice-ages.
This session invites papers presenting new and precise chronologies of glacier advances from extra-polar regions in both hemispheres and the tropics. Accurate cosmogenic nuclide and radiocarbon chronologies from moraines and glacial bedrock, on time-scales covering the last glacial cycle up to present day are invited. Particular focus is put on papers addressing the inter-hemispheric structure of the Last Glacial Maximum, the deglaciation period and the Late Glacial reversal, as well as the pulse of Holocene glacier fluctuations.
Detailed geomorphic maps of glacier basins, the fundament of each high precision glacier chronology, are invited for the poster session.
